Akram Khan, Jatka78 & Cirk La Putyka: A New Milestone in New Circus

Cirk La Putyka and Jatka78 are proud to announce a groundbreaking collaboration with British choreographer Akram Khan, one of the most respected figures in contemporary dance and theatre.

Akram Khan, known for his unique contemporary movement language underpinned by Indian classical dance, is stepping into the world of new circus for the first time, where he will create a new work that will provide a new perspective on the genre.

“I am thrilled to be collaborating with Rosťa Novák and his incredible company Cirk La Putyka/Jatka78 on this unique and exciting upcoming project. I have always believed that as an artist, you have to find pleasure in drowning, and I’ve known that the day I’m in the studio and repeating myself is the day I should stop creating. Circus has always intrigued me, but I had never found the right entry point despite many requests to work on circus projects. However, after spending some time with Rosťa and his artists in Prague, I was truly inspired by their creativity and humbled by their respect for the creative process. So, I decided it was time to challenge myself further and dive into the world of circus. I can’t wait to collaborate with these wonderful artists and uncover what myth we can share with audiences.”

A world-renowned artist, Khan has worked with stars like Kylie Minogue, Juliette Binoche, and Nitin Sawhney. Now, he brings his distinct artistic vision to the new circus realm, culminating in the premiere of a new work in 2027. The preparation process includes a series of workshops in Prague and London.

“This is a dream come true and a milestone in our theatre journey, as we venture into uncharted waters. We will learn from Akram and draw inspiration from him. We will push our boundaries. We believe that together we will create something magical that Prague and the Czech Republic can be proud of,”

– says Rostislav Novák Jr., artistic director of Cirk La Putyka.

“The premiere in 2027 might seem far off, but with creators of Akram Khan’s stature, long-term planning like this is essential,”

– Novák adds.

The creative journey will be documented, with plans for a documentary film and a feature film adaptation, offering audiences an intimate behind-the-scenes view of this exceptional collaboration.
